Okinawa: Ie Island

Okinawa is comprised of many islands with some of the smaller ones making great places to explore. The island we set our sights on was Ie Island which is about a 30 min ferry ride from Motobu port in the north western part of the Okinawa main island. We were hoping for a tropical paradise exploration expedition, however, the rain put a damper on the whole tropical paradise part.

The island itself is a small self contained island that can explored in about 6-8 hours by bicycle. Rentals are cheap and plentiful and the roadways are very easy to follow with the maps provided. There is a small mountain on the island, which we did scale. The island also has very open landscapes which makes riding a joy. There is also a small cave that opens up to the ocean and the north end of the island terminate in cliffs.

While the weather wasn’t exactly as we had hoped for, the island was exactly as we had imagined. A beautiful place in the rain that would have probably been perfect in the sun.
